Alzheimer’s disease: An overview of the pathology, diagnosis & treatment

This module provides an overall synopsis of key aspects of the mechanisms and types of Alzheimer’s disease, risk and protective factors, diagnostic pathways; and current treatment options.

Specifically, the module provides relevant information on modifiable and non‐modifiable risk factors and protective factors, key pathologic hallmarks and the role of amyloid precursor protein and tau in disease pathology. The disease continuum, diagnostic pathway, and patient journey are described, including the role of cognitive assessments, diagnostic technologies, and biomarkers. The module concludes with an overview of current pharmacological and nonpharmacologic treatment options including some new interventions being studied.
